Mika Salo has admitted to Autosport Magazine that he is glad his days at the Panasonic Toyota Racing team are behind him and that in his opinion, new rookie Cristiano da Matta will struggle to be competitive. He has however, a lot of faith in Oliver Panis' abilities.Natilius The Finn and 2002 teammate Allan McNish were dropped by Toyota before their debut season in the sport came to a close, and replaced with French veteran Olivier Panis and CART champion da Matta. The decision to replace Mika took many by surprise, including Mika himself, as he still had a year to run on his contract. In the aftermath, Salo announced his retirement from the sport and although he was smiling when he made certain remarks to the British magazine, such as hoping his former team struggle next year, the apparent hurt at the situation was still clearly evident. "I think Panis can handle it well because he's got experience from other teams,” he told the British magazine. “ But I think da Matta will struggle a bit. When he tested for us in the summer he was driving the same day as Allan and he was two seconds slower. And Paul Ricard is the easiest circuit in the world. I'm happy I'm not there. I couldn't take that any more, one more year of the same thing. I really hope they struggle a lot."
